Day 1: Arrival in Goba – Discovering Dinsho and Its Wildlife.
Your journey begins with a scenic flight aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET175, landing at Goba Airport. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by our local team who will accompany you throughout your adventure. From the airport, enjoy a scenic drive to the village of Dinsho—considered the main entrance to the Bale Mountains. Once settled, embark on a guided nature walk through the lush surroundings of the park headquarters. This area is a haven for wildlife, and it’s common to spot grazing warthogs, shy Menelik’s bushbucks, striking mountain nyalas, and Bohor reedbucks. Bird enthusiasts will be delighted by the array of endemic species, including Abyssinian catbirds, blue-winged geese, and Rouget’s rails, all fluttering through the alpine scrub and woodland. Goba Wabe Shebelle Hotel, a modest accommodation located less than an hour from the park, providing basic yet comfortable lodging close to nature. Day 2: Sanetti Plateau – High-Altitude Landscapes & Rare Carnivores.
After an early breakfast, venture higher into the park to the stunning Sanetti Plateau, a windswept expanse sitting above 4,000 meters. This elevated plateau is the best place in Ethiopia to encounter the world’s rarest wild dog—the Ethiopian wolf. With its russet coat and slender frame, it’s an iconic sight as it prowls the plateau in the early morning hours in search of its primary prey: the endemic giant molerat. The drive across the plateau follows one of the continent’s loftiest all-weather roads, weaving past moorlands dotted with lobelias and heathers. Ascend to Tulu Dimtu—the highest peak in the park at 4,377 meters—offering sweeping panoramas and crisp mountain air. Descend toward the forested escarpment and arrive at the rustic village of Rira. From Rira, you’ll have the option to unwind with traditional coffee and snacks, or join a gentle two-hour hike into the heart of the Harenna Forest. This route leads to a dramatic gorge lined with towering bamboo and culminates at two cascading waterfalls, layered beautifully atop one another. Keep watch for arboreal acrobats like the colobus monkey, and be on the lookout for the rare and shy Bale monkey, which resides only in this part of the country. Overnight at Harenna Forest Hotel and Cultural Lodge, charming budget guesthouse nestled near the forest’s edge, providing a warm and authentic local atmosphere. Day 3: Gushuralle Peak Hike – Departure to Addis Ababa.
On your final morning, enjoy a tranquil drive deeper into the lush southern reaches of the national park. Your destination is the Gushuralle Peak trail, an immersive 2-3 hour hike through a dense canopy of bamboo and cloud forest. As you ascend, listen for the calls of the forest’s inhabitants—grunting warthogs, rustling bushbucks, and perhaps the telltale screech of a black-and-white colobus monkey swinging overhead. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view across the Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia’s last remaining intact tropical cloud forests. After descending, return to the town of Goba, where your driver will escort you back to the airport in time for your flight to Addis Ababa.
