Day 1: Arrival in Semera – Drive to Afdera & Trek to Erta Ale Volcano.
Your journey begins upon landing at Semera Airport, the gateway to the Danakil. You’ll be welcomed by your local guide, and from there, you’ll embark on an overland adventure into the heart of the Depression. The first leg of your trip will take you to Lake Afdera, a shimmering saltwater lake nestled in the desert basin. Along the way, the dry, wind-sculpted terrain gives you an initial taste of this unique, inhospitable environment. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to bathe in the mineral-rich hot springs surrounding the lake — a rejuvenating experience in the middle of this arid landscape. After lunch, the journey continues deeper into the desert toward Erta Ale, one of the few continuously active volcanoes in the world. At Dodom, a remote outpost near the base of the volcano, you’ll meet a caravan of camels and support staff who will transport the camping gear, food, and water for the ascent. In the late afternoon, you will begin your trek — a gradual 3-hour hike through the volcanic rock fields and blackened lava terrain to the summit of Erta Ale. As night falls, you’ll arrive at the crater’s edge to witness one of Earth’s most mesmerizing natural spectacles: a glowing lake of molten lava, bubbling and churning inside the caldera. You’ll spend the night camping on the rim of the volcano under a blanket of stars, lulled to sleep by the distant rumble of volcanic activity.

Day 2: Erta Ale – Hamed Ela – Dallol – Lake Afdera
Wake up early to catch the eerie sunrise over Erta Ale’s crater before descending back to Dodom. After a quick breakfast, you’ll continue your desert journey toward Hamed Ela, a sparse settlement in the Afar lowlands known as the base camp for visiting Dallol and the salt flats. The road is rugged and remote, with incredible views of volcanic ridges and the changing hues of the desert. Along the way, you’ll pass camel caravans making their way to the salt pans — a centuries-old tradition where slabs of salt are harvested, shaped, and loaded onto camels for transport across the desert. These Afari salt traders, often barefoot and draped in vibrant cloths, offer a rare glimpse into a traditional way of life that has endured for generations. From Hamed Ela, you’ll travel to Ragad (Asebo), a salt-mining site where you can watch the intricate and labor-intensive process of excavating and cutting salt blocks by hand. The rectangular slabs are then tied into bundles and mounted on camels — a scene that echoes ancient trade routes. You’ll then head to the surreal landscapes of Dallol, a geological marvel and one of the most volcanically active spots on Earth. Here, the earth erupts in a kaleidoscope of colors: vivid yellow sulfur ponds, rust-red iron deposits, emerald pools, and steaming fumaroles. This otherworldly terrain, shaped by intense geothermal activity, is often likened to a Martian landscape. The day concludes with a scenic drive to Lake Afdera, where you’ll make camp for the night by the water’s edge. Enjoy dinner under the vast, starlit desert sky.

After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll have a bit of time to explore the lake’s surroundings, perhaps observing local salt collectors at work or taking a final dip in the warm, mineral-rich waters. When ready, you’ll begin the drive back through the harsh but striking Danakil terrain to Semera, retracing your path across the sunbaked expanse. Upon arrival, your guide will drop you off at Semera Airport, where you’ll board your flight back to Addis Ababa or onward to your next destination.
